MATH FACTS - STAIR TREADS

math facts

At The UPS Store, we’re in the problem-solving business. We‘ve found an innovative way to help students learn their multiplication tables with math facts on your stair treads. Goodbye Flash Cards, Hello colorful stairs.

The idea is for students to visualize and have a constant reminder for learning their math facts. Let us help your school take a big “step” to make learning math easier and more visual for students.

Why Math Facts?

Putting math facts on your stair treads will increase your schools learning resources by putting the equations right at their feet and increase the repetition of your students seeing them everyday. Because they are in an unusual place, students seem to think the math facts are more exciting than on a wall or other locations around the school.

Have unusual sizing or layouts?

Since our initial partnership with Alcova Elementary, we have partnered with numerous schools all around the country!

Have an odd shaped stairwell or one that does not have consistent sizing for each step? Not a problem! See below for examples of our custom designs for these types of projects.

How Do I Order?

The Tread Stair Signs are all custom printed based on your specific schools needs and therefore each project requires a custom quotation.

What You Should Provide:

1. Length of the stair step.

2. Height of the stair tread...measure just the space that is flat.  (Usually 4"- 5" tall)

3. Number of stair steps

4. If possible, please include a picture of the stairway.

We can customize the colors and the specific multiplication facts you want to display.

How Does the Product Work?

Each stair tread sign is printed on a adhesive back vinyl, laminated and applied to a sturdy PVC board.  These boards can be mounted to the face of each stair tread with construction adhesive and can easily be done by your janitorial staff.

How Do I Mount the Math Facts?

Instructions For Adhering Math Facts To Stair Treads

1.       Plan to mount these signs after the students have left for the weekend.

2.       Clean face of each stair tread with a mild cleaner like Windex.  Wipe it dry.

3.       Make sure the face of stair tread is free of any foreign matter that might inhibit the Math Fact strip from adhering to the face of the stair tread. If necessary, lightly sand the face of the stair tread with sandpaper in order to ensure good contact between the Math Fact sign and the stair tread itself.

4.       Wipe the back of each Math Fact strip with a clean dry cloth to ensure there is nothing on the back that might inhibit it from adhering to the stair tread.

5.       TEST position each stair tread sign by holding it to the face of the appropriate stair tread to ensure that the length and width are correct.

6.      Apply two thin lines of Construction Adhesive (like the one shown below) down the length of each side of the stair tread sign and then a squiggle line down the middle.  You want to apply the adhesive about a half an inch away from each edge.  If you apply it to close to the edge of the board, you might run the risk of the adhesive squeezing out from behind the board when it is pushed up against the stair tread.

7.      You can apply the adhesive to 5-6 stair tread sign at a time.

8.       Once the adhesive has been applied, and with the help of another individual, carefully position the stair tread sign to the face of the stair tread.  Gently move the stair tread sign to the left/right and up/down in order to spread the adhesive across the back of each sign and the face of the stair tread.

9.       Position each sign in the center of the stair tread and on the flattest part of each stair tread.  Using a rubber mallet, tap the face of each stair tread sign to ensure proper contact between the stair tread sign and the face of the stair tread.  If necessary, use some masking tape to help hold the stair tread in place while the adhesive dries

10.   Continue with each stair, but after four stairs have been completed, step back and look to ensure the continuity of positioning is staying the same with the other signs already mounted.

11.   Adhesive will dry over the weekend.

12.   Over time, each stair tread can be wiped down using a mild cleaner. This will remove any scuff marks from the student’s shoes.   Avoid excessive water contact with the stair tread signs, like heavy mopping.

Examples of a product that can be used:

Shown below is an example of the type of adhesive that works best to adhere the Math Fact signs to the stair treads.  This can be purchased at your local Home Depot, Lowes or most hardware stores.  It is called Locktite PL 300 Foam Board Construction Adhesive.  This is specific for Polystyrene.  On average, it will take approximately 1 tube to adhere 2 MATH FACT signs to the stair tread.  This is an average and its always best to have more tubes on hand that can be returned vs. running out of adhesive in the middle of installation.

How Do I Clean the Math Facts?

Cleaning the math facts is simply done with a mild cleaner and clean towel.
